PROGRAM NOTES

In his debut classical album, pianist Henry Dehlinger explores Spain through the virtuoso compositions of two of the country’s greatest composers - Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909) and Enrique Granados (1867-1916).

A nostalgic remembrance of Spain's Andalusia region, Isaac Albéniz's Evocación (Iberia, Book I) is full of incredibly deep, impressionistic colors and gorgeous dissonances. El puerto (Iberia, Book I), is a musical portrait of the port town of Cádiz where Dehlinger spent numerous weekends at La Playa de la Caleta, Cadiz’s spectacularly beautiful beach situated between two castles. The piece’s main theme is a lively zapateado, a stomping Andalusian dance with intricate footwork.

The city of Seville was the inspiration for Fête-dieu à Séville (Iberia, Book I), which evokes a Corpus Christi festival procession, approaching from the distance and gradually building to a jubilant climax. The revelry subsides, leaving just the solemn tones of bells heralding the midnight mass. Seville also inspired the gorgeous Triana (Iberia, Book II) where the repeated rhythms of a gypsy dance combine with lyric melodies in a wonderfully romantic, rich-textured climax. The gypsy quarter of Granada was the inspiration for El albaicín (Iberia, Book III). Its sensuous bulerías theme - a fast Flamenco dance rhythm - alternates with a mysterious cante jondo vocal theme, a deep Flamenco song with Moorish overtones...

Dehlinger next showcases the breadth of Enrique Granados' musical poetry, from the intense sensation of longing in Añoranza to the exhilarating dance rhythms of Zapateado and the 12 Danzas españolas (12 Spanish Dances). The album's concluding track, Quejas, ó la maja y el ruiseñor (The Maiden and the Nightingale) is from Granados' Goyescas suite. Based on a haunting folksong Granados heard sung by a girl in the Valencia countryside, it was written in an improvisational manner, yet its complex passagework and rich texture will give, as one reviewer said, “the voluptuous sense of passing the fingers through masses of richly-colored jewels...”

Hailed by UK’s Gramophone Magazine for his “exquisite piano-playing” and “vibrantly colorful palette,” Henry Dehlinger is a widely acclaimed American concert pianist, recording artist, composer and music arranger. ConcertoNet.com praises him as "an experienced and versatile soloist.” MusicWeb International admires his "delicious piano playing," and Audiophile Audition applauds his "adroit and sparkling" performances. Dehlinger has appeared on some of the world’s leading stages from San Francisco’s War Memorial and Performing Arts Center to the White House in Washington, D.C. He has also appeared as featured soloist with The United States Army Chorus, special guest performer on Washington’s Embassy Row, and in concert for notable public officials, from the President of the United States to the Prince of Wales. Born in San Francisco, he quickly earned a reputation as a prodigious talent. By the age of eleven, he was performing with major orchestras under conductors such as Riccardo Chailly and Edo de Waart and operatic legends Luciano Pavarotti, Montserrat Caballé and Georgio Tozzi. His critically acclaimed recordings on the MSR Classics label are available on Amazon.com, ArkivMusic, iTunes, and other music stores around the world.
